Behind the Theme: Double Life

Artypants Issue 04 planning began in late January in a cabin on the South Shore of Massachusetts.

We started by breaking bread (literally some very good focaccia) and looking closely at magazine spreads, letting the conversation unfold naturally from the pages in front of us. From there, the team traveled to the ET Wright Building in Rockland, MA, where shoes were once made in the 1920s and where Artypants now calls headquarters. There, we ran into Lara Williams, mid-encaustic magic, and painter Dennis Doyle in his studio, before analyzing past work and the goals we aspire to, identifying which treatments and changes could be made.

Together, we created a Book Map and highlighted areas ready for thoughtful innovation.

After hitting the pillow to dream, we returned the next day to whittle ten ideas down to one.

We left with the theme: Double Life, shaped in collaboration by Maryann Gibbons, Chandlyr Kay, and Amy Parker, one we believe quietly holds more than one truth at once.

A few contenders closely considered included: Field of Dreams, Vessels, and Moon Paradise. Ultimately, our hope is that this theme resonates with artists in ways they can call their own and creates a cohesive and compelling reading experience for the next issue.

What if transformation is the point?

If you are drawn to the theme, we invite you to consider submitting work that speaks to it.

This may be an existing body of work or an entirely new invitation to create. All mediums welcome!
